Ongoing COVID-19 considerations

For anyone concerned about face-to-face working in the light of Covid 19 I am offering online sessions. This requires special considerations for the protection of data.

For online sessions, I am conducting therapy & counselling mainly via FaceTime, WhatsApp & Skype.

The choice of online platform may change in the light of information about online security for individual platforms and the client's personal preference. Technology can be severely limited in its security and it is important that clients are aware of this when they contract to work with me online.

Occasionally the internet signal can become poor or even lost during a session and because of this I will always have a backup of a landline or mobile phone to call a client back and minimise disruption to the client’s session.

Payment for sessions.

You may choose to pay by cheque or online banking. If you do choose to pay by online banking please use only your initials rather than your full name to ensure your privacy.

Clients

I see clients from all walks of life and all backgrounds. Emotional distress, stress and mental health issues can effect any and all of us. Each year one in four adults will experience a mild to moderate mental health problem. This can be the result of sudden unexpected events, planned transitions or from early trauma resurfacing when current life events trigger past experiences and memories. It is during these difficult times that clients may seek professional help from a counselling service or psychotherapist in order to make sense of their emotional distress. Experience demonstrates that with support it becomes possible to explore the underlying issues, find a way of resolving unfinished business allowing the person's life to move forward in a different way.

In summary, psychotherapy and counselling can help with a range of issues including but not limited to:

Depression
Problems with anger
Bereavement or loss
Anxiety and phobias
Relationship difficulties
Traumatic events
Low self esteem
Personal/self development

For more information about the way I might work with some of these specific issues, please visit the relevant page of my site.

Therapy

Therapy Sessions

I work with clients for varying lengths of time. Sometimes between 5-10 sessions of counselling can set a person's life on a new course, for example enabling them to deal with work related stress, anxiety or low mood in a new way. Sometimes the issue is deeper seated and reaches back into unresolved issues from the past. This may need longer term, more in-depth psychotherapy where for example there has been early trauma, loss or family breakdown.

Initial meeting

After an initial enquiry I usually invite prospective clients to meet me for a half hour consultation in which we can decide if we are suited to work together. This is an opportunity to answer any questions that you may have about me or about the way I work. If I am not the right therapist for you I may be able to suggest a counsellor or psychotherapist in York who can better help you. There is no requirement at the initial meeting to share a lot of detailed personal information until we have agreed a contract.

Contract

Once we have decided to work together I will then take a full and detailed history and we agree a contract, a focus for the therapy and regular review points along the way. You are free to make an ending at any time but I usually suggest that ideally we take one or two sessions to do this.

To arrange an initial meeting please either phone me on 01904 641996 or e-mail me. I am happy to answer any questions you may have about my particular approach as a psychotherapist before we meet. I have an answer phone where you can leave a confidential message and I will aim to return your call the same day.

For your privacy you do not need to share a lot of very personal information in your initial contact with me by email.
